Lagos State Model College, Kankon made history after emerging first place winners of the Lagos Code Week competition in the senior category at the grand finale of the week-long Coding competition which held on Thursday, June 28 2018. The school’s 3-man team representatives mesmerised the judges and organizers of the competition by completing all the tasks given in the competition, a feat only accomplished by them. Also, Whitesands schools, Lekki emerged winners in the junior category.
The week-long Coding competition, opened to 337 Primary and Secondary schools in Lagos State had both Government and private schools’ participation across the 6 Educational Districts in Lagos. It was designed to further encourage the use of a wider range of Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM) skills within the school curriculum and raise ICT standards among Lagos state schools while fostering the rapid growth and development of coding skills among students.
The competition kicked on Monday June 25, 2018 with the preliminaries for Education District 1 and 2, in two centres; Oriwu Girls Senior High School, Ikorodu and Ipaja and Government College School Complex, Iyana Ipaja. 24 schools contested keenly to emerge winners in their respective categories. On the second day, the competition moved to Education District 3 and 4 where over 46 schools in the Districts slogged it out in the two centres; Akande Dahunsi Memorial School, Ikoyi and New Era Girls School, Surulere. On day 3, 57 schools in District 5 and 6 contended in Badagry Senior Grammar School, Badagry and Ilupeju Grammar School respectively to emerge representatives of the Districts in their respective categories at the grand finale.
In all, over 39 schools made it to the grand finale, which held at Methodist Girls high school. Present at the event was the Special Adviser to the Governor on Education, Mr. Obafela Bank-Olemoh along with the Tutor Generals-Permanent Secretaries (TGPSes) of the 6 Education District, and Education officers from the Lagos State Ministry of Education. Also at the events were representatives of CodeLagos partner organizations including PriceWaterhouseCoopers, SystemSpecs, Diamond bank, ARM, and Oracle.

Lagos Code Week was put together by Lagos State Ministry of Education through its CodeLagos initiative, The largest Edu-Tech initiative in Africa aimed at training one million Lagos residents to code by the year 2020.
